Ariamna Contino & Alex Hernández

Special Preview: 09.08.21 - 09.12.21

This seminal group of works marks the inception of the Aesthetic Militancy series by Ariamna Contino (b. Havana, Cuba, 1984) and Alex Hernández (b. Havana, Cuba, 1982). Both artists were invited to represent Cuba in the Venice Biennale of 2019. The series presents societal statistics in a graphic and unexpected way, through master papercuts, sometimes painting behind the glass, other times on the face of the glass making the work literally jump out of the frame.

Conceived for and exhibited in the 6th Salon of Contemporary Art in 2014 at the Center for the Development of Visual Arts in Havana (CDAV), topics include: Homicide, Suicide, Executions, Corruption, Immigration, Imprisonment, Guerilla Warfare and Cocaine Production.

This exhibit is comprised of 16 pieces shown together for the first time in the United States. Site specific pieces have been produced based on the location of the exhibit and to date, versions of this series have been produced and exhibited in:
